New Movie Friday: Sanctum, The Roommate

I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to having some family movies back in theaters. We’ve got ‘Gnomeo & Juliet’ next week, and that looks pretty fun.

sanctum-posterUntil then, James Cameron takes on thrill-seeking cave people, and Minka Kelly deals with creepy roommate Leighton Meester. Here’s the scoop…

‘Sanctum 3D’ – I’ve been looking forward to this ever since I heard about it. James Cameron directs this thriller about an underwater cave diving team who run into a few problems during an expedition to the unexplored and least accessible cave system in the world.

You might not recognize a lot of the actors, although Ioan Gruffudd from the British ‘Horatio Hornblower’ series is one of the stars.

Rated R for language, some violence and disturbing images; 109 minutes; official site.

roommate-poster ‘The Roommate’ – It’s everyone’s worst nightmare. You go away to college, get settled in your classes, and discover that your roommate is a psycho killer. Such is the case when Sara (Minka Kelly) moves in with Rebecca (Leighton Meester), who decides she wants the girl all to herself.

I must admit I just have no desire to see this movie, partly because it’s been done so many times before. But the cast is interesting — Frances Fisher, Cam Gigandet, Aly Michalka, Billy Zane, Nina Dobrev and Katerina Graham. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ fans will recognize those last two from the hit CW show.

Rated PG-13 for violence and menace, sexual content, some language and teen partying; 93 minutes; official site.

Whoa, that’s a long list of legit actors in The Roommate! Still won’t convince me to see it until it’s on Starz, though.

I saw a trailer for The Roommate when I was at a movie last week, and I was scratching my head. Minka Kelly was named “sexiest woman alive” by some men’s magazine (GQ? Esquire?) and was seemingly all over men’s magazine for the past couple of years. It looked to me like she was going to be a giant star. She couldn’t find anything better than this?

The first few seconds of The Roommate looked intriguing, but I don’t know think I’m going to see it. Too creepy. I’ve had some weird roommates over the years (nothing like the movie, though), so I also don’t think I need to see it.

I’d rather see The Roommate than Sanctum. I’ve survived nutso roommates, but, as a claustrophobic water-hater, wouldn’t have a chance against underwater caves. After thinking about it, I now need to be sedated.

I love the Horatio Hornblower series but I’m waiting for a bit lighter fare. I saw Sorcerer’s Apprentice last weekend. I thought it was going to be lame but I was surprised that I really liked it. The special effects were cool, story was decent, Nicolas Cage was pretty funny.

Cave divers are the extreme sports people’s extreme sports people. I’ll be curious to see what you think of the movie, but we might well go see that one.

I think I’ll pass on both of these. But if a good family movie comes along, we’re going!

Here’s what I say to both of these: eh. Nothing is pulling me toward either one. So, I’ll skip ‘em. But looking forward to more reviews from you, since I”ve taken your advice many times before and been glad I did. Last night I watched “Flipped.” Though slow-moving at times, it was sweet and engaging.
