Oscar Nominations 2018: Shape of Water Lands 13 Nominations

Oscar nominations for the 90th annual awards were announced on Tuesday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.

Academy President John Bailey was joined by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis to reveal the nominees in 24 categories.

Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” continues to dominate the awards scene, leading the pack with a whopping 13 nominations. Following with eight nominations is the war film “Dunkirk,” and Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” scored seven nominations (though, interestingly, no nomination in the directing category).

All three of those films earned best picture nominations, which also included “Call Me By Your Name,” “Darkest Hour,” “Get Out,” “Phantom Thread,” “Lady Bird,” and “The Post.”

Which film will walk home with the statue for Best Picture? My prediction is “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” not necessarily because I agree that it deserves to win, but because it’s already scored Best Picture wins at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild, among others.

While I thought the film was good, my personal pick for Best Picture would go to “Lady Bird,” directed by Greta Gerwig. Check out some other Oscar predictions by the numbers here.

And let’s be honest. It would be amazing if a woman won that directing award. In 86 years, only four women have been nominated for a best director Oscar, and only one, Kathryn Bigelow, has won – for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010.

However, I don’t think that will happen. I think Guillermo del Toro will win best director for “The Shape of Water.” And it will be well deserved, because of all the nuances involved with directing a fantasy film of that nature.

The Academy Awards — hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second time — will air live on ABC on March 4.
