Romantic Movies, While You Were Sleeping, Valentine's Day

Top 10 Romantic Movies – For Valentine’s Day or Any Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or any other day of the year, it’s always a good day to watch romantic movies.

Some of the best romantic movies feature people of different social classes. It might be Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the classic poor boy, rich girl love story. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in the classic rich boy, poor girl love story. Or maybe Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as a poor boy and a rich girl on a doomed sea voyage!

Whatever the circumstances, it all adds up to some of the best romantic movies in the history of cinema. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Top 10 Romantic Movies – For Valentine’s Day or Any Day

1. The Notebook (2004)

Romantic Movies – The Notebook

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are oh so romantic in this lovely film. A poor and passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom. But they’re soon separated by their social differences. Sigh. Directed by Nick Cassavetes, this romantic movie also stars Gena Rowlands and James Garner.

2. Titanic (1997)

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a poor artist. Kate Winslet plays a 17-year-old aristocrat. They fall in love aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic. And the rest, as they say, is history. All the way up until she’s an old woman and throws that diamond into the ocean and I’m bawling my eyes out. (Yes, I completely believe she dies at the end, and they’re happily reunited. Aboard the ship, of course. With everyone clapping.) Directed by James Cameron, this movie also stars Billy Zane as her snobbish fiance.

3. Pretty Woman (1990)

Richard Gere is a high-powered man in a legal but hurtful business. He needs an escort for some social events on a trip to California. He hires a beautiful prostitute, played by Julia Roberts. Of course, sparks fly and they fall in love. Directed by Garry Marshall, this movie also stars Hector Elizondo as a lovely hotel concierge.

4. Say Anything (1989)

That boombox John Cusack holds above his head as he stands outside Ione Skye’s house? Classic. Cusack plays a noble underachiever who falls in love with a beautiful valedictorian, played by Skye. They fall in love over the summer, but she’s supposed to head to college in the fall. Directed by Cameron Crowe, this romantic movie also stars John Mahoney as her dad.

5. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Tom Hanks plays a recently widowed man who’s trying to move forward. His son calls a radio talk-show in an attempt to find his dad a partner. That’s when Meg Ryan enters the picture. Directed by Nora Ephron, this is one of my all-time favorite romantic movies.

6. Green Card (1990)

Gerard Depardieu is an oafish Irishman who wants to stay in the United States. Andie MacDowell is a gardener who agrees to marry him for convenience. But their union soon becomes more romantic. Directed by Peter Weir, this movie also stars Bebe Neuwirth.

7. Dirty Dancing (1987)

Is there any romantic movie with a better ending than Dirty Dancing? I think not. Directed by Emile Ardolino, this movie stars Jennifer Grey as a teenager named Frances “Baby” Houseman. Spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, she falls in love with the camp’s worldly dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). The result? Nobody puts baby in a corner. Jerry Orbach plays Baby’s protective dad.

8. Ghost (1990)

It’s the movie that made “Unchained Melody” famous. And pottery. Patrick Swayze plays a man who dies in an accident. But his spirit stays behind to warn his lover (Demi Moore) of impending danger. Whoopi Goldberg is the reluctant psychic who helps. Directed by Jerry Zucker, this heartwarming movie makes you believe in ghosts.

9. Moonstruck (1987)

Snap out of it! So says Cher to the guy she’s NOT supposed to be in love with, played by Nicolas Cage. Cher plays Loretta Castorini, a bookkeeper from Brooklyn, New York. She finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for Ronny Cammareri (Cage), the brother of the man she’s supposed to marry. Directed by Norm Jewison, this romantic movies includes tons of fun catch-phrases.

10. While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Jon Turteltaub directs this beautifully romantic movie. It stars Sandra Bullock as a ticket-collecting romantic who’s all alone in the world. She pretends to be engaged to an unconscious man (Peter Gallagher), but she can’t fool his brother (Bill Pullman). Love, love, love this movie.
