“The Overnight,” a zany comedy about an overnight family “play date” between two couples that turns progressively more bizarre over 24 hours, premiered Tuesday night at the Tribeca Film Festival after getting buzz at Sundance.

Taylor Schilling (“Orange is the New Black”) and Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”) play a couple with a young son, who have just moved into a new Los Angeles neighborhood and are trying to fit in and make friends. Jason Schwartzman (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) plays an eccentric and wealthy resident, who invites them to his house, so he and his sexy French wife (Judith Godrèche) can get to know each other over dinner while their children play.

After the kiddies go to bed, the couples get acquainted over wine and joints, and as the evening wears on, things turn funky. It turns out the eccentric couple have more in mind for Schilling and Scott’s characters than friendship.

Patrick Brice, the director, and “The Overnight” female stars turned up on the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival to pose for photographers and promote the film.

Sadly, neither of the male stars turned up to talk about their nude scenes. The running joke in the comedy involves penis size insecurity; Jason Schwartzman’s penis is humongous, while Adam Scott’s penis is preternaturally small.

There is a lot of frolicking around a swimming pool and the characters, including the reticent couple played by Schilling and Scott, throw off their clothes and jump in nude with the focus on the guys. Schilling’s character only skims down to her underwear, and she is mortified when her husband dances around the pool naked with Schwartzman’s character.

“I absolutely wanted a ton of male nudity in the movie,” the director told me. “I think that’s something that you normally don’t see, I guess, don’t normally see with this tone of the movie, so I wanted it to be just like one of the nice surprises in the movie. Obviously, it’s a talking point, but deep down I think the movie, hopefully, exists as this sweet story of these people connecting with each other.”

Luckily for the guys, especially Scott, they are wearing prosthetic penises. I asked the director how they kept them on. “Really strong glue. Like super glue that sticks on your skin.” He added, “Jason, once we stuck it on him, it was hard to get it off, so he ended up wearing it for a long amount of time,” he laughed.

Schwartzman would prank the cast and crew and leave his prop penis, made out of rubber, in unexpected places. “One was on our monitor,” the director said. “We didn’t know it was there and then I’d noticed something up top and looked and there was a penis on the monitor.”

Did Scott, ahem, complain about getting the short end of the stick? “For sure,” Brice laughed. “But ultimately, he understood it was for the sake for the film.”

Judy Godreche noted that from the moment she read the script she couldn’t stop laughing. “I was kind of amazed at how far it was going. I was like, wow, are we really going to shoot this?”

Schilling told me, “There was a lot of laughing. It’s good you can’t see me when the guys are dancing. And Jason and Adam are exactly what they appear to be. They’re magnificent and sweet and funny, and it was also very cold, so you know what that means.”

She added, “And they’re all prosthetics, which I feel we have to empathize in order to protect Adam. We need to make that clear. I’m sure Jason would be very happy leaving that detail unnoted, but for Adam Scott, I will mention the penises are prosthetics.”

As for what we can expect from her character Piper Chapman in the acclaimed Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” the actress told me there is a lot going on. “She’s sort of testing out her own wingspan in new ways.”
