‘Mortal Instruments’ to Become ‘Shadowhunters’ TV Show

The Mortal Instruments: City of BonesCassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” series started its visual life as a movie series in 2013. “City of Bones” did … okay. It wasn’t super successful, but the fans liked it well enough, even if it wasn’t accurate to the books. (And hey, it had Cersei Lannister in it, so what’s not to like?)

But rather than continue as a series of movies, the Mortal Instruments series was picked up as a TV show. Dubbed “Shadowhunters,” the TV drama will air on ABC Family, produced by Constantin Film.

While Clare has written other books that take place in the same universe, including “The Bane Chronicles” and the “Infernal Devices” series, “Shadowhunters” will only include the plot from the “Mortal Instruments” series. The number of episodes in the season has yet to be announced.

Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” series follows Clary Fray and her adventures through the world of the Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids sworn to protect the world from demons. The show begins with Clary discovering her secret Shadowhunter past, similar to where the “City of Bones” movie began.

Filming begins in Toronto in May. Casting has yet to be announced – at all. Which seems strange, considering how close we are to filming.

Clare has made it clear on her Twitter that she has no say in casting and that she fully expects Constantin Film to recast entirely, without bringing over any of the movie’s actors.

However, most of the fandom is calling for Robert Sheehan to reprise his role as Simon Lewis, Clary Fray’s mundane (human) best friend who helps her throughout the series, who was undoubtedly the best part of the original “City of Bones” film.

Other calls for casting include the talented Crystal Reed (“Teen Wolf”) as lead Clary Fairchild and Logan Lerman, known for his roles in book-to-movie adaptations “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” and “The Perks of Being A Wallflower,” as Simon Lewis.

This makes me super happy because I loved the movie and gave it 4.5 out of 5 reels. I was thinking The CW, but we’ll see what they do with it on ABC Family.

Re casting, if I was in charge of the world, I’d bring both Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower over from the movie, along with Robert Sheehan.

It’s “The Infernal Devices” not the “Immortal Devices.”

Okay, so I have read all the books and seen the movie and think that the actors they picked are perfect! Maybe Kevin was a bit old to play Alec but Jace, Clary, Simon, Magnus and even Isabelle were perfectly cast. I also thought Luke looked like the raggad but concentrated character described in the book.

I did not think that the movie was a good interpretation of the novels, nor did I find most of the casting choices acceptable. I could get on board with a couple, but most seemed too old, or played the characters too dark/hardened. Some of my picks include:

    Alec- Drew Roy
Isabelle – Elizabeth Gillies/Grace Phipps/Anna Sophia Robb (with black hair)
    Jace – Benjamin Stone/Younger Alex Pettyfer look-alike
    Clary – Molly C. Quinn/Lily Collins
    Simon – Robert Sheehan/Dylan Obrien

However, this is based on my very limited knowledge of specific actors’ ranges. There are probably unknowns who could get an amazing breakthrough with this show. What I don’t want to see is what ABC Family normally does – cast individuals from other shows on their channel/Disney/CW/MTV that were cancelled just because they want to see these people getting jobs. Plus, most of the actors in this age range that I like are becoming big movie stars, so they really wouldn’t want a tv role. I am excited to see what becomes of this though. I walked out of the movie saying these books would make a better tv show… so hopefully I’m right.

I am so happy they’re make the mortal instruments into a TV show, and I hope they bring the actors from the movie to the show, because that would be great.
