The Voice Recap: The Live Shows Premiere – 5×13

The Voice: Shelby Z

This week on “The Voice” (@NBCTheVoice), the playoff round begins with the Top 20 vocalists performing live, and America getting the chance to vote. But first, Flo-rida and Christina (in a sexy black fishnet outfit!) perform “How I Feel.”

Three artists from each team will move on to next week. Two will be based on America’s votes, and the third will be chosen by their coach (so glad I don’t have to make that tough choice).

Also, in addition to voting, you can help your favorites by downloading their songs on iTunes. Any artist in the top 10 on the iTunes singles chart at the close of the voting window – 11 a.m. ET tomorrow – their iTunes downloads will be multiplied by five, which could make all the difference, says host Carson Daly.

Let’s take a look at the performances by Team Adam and Team Blake. Team Christina and Team CeeLo will perform tomorrow night.

Team Blake: Shelbie Z (@shelbie_z). “Fancy,” Reba McIntyre. Her voice reminds me of Wynonna Judd – she just lays it all out on the stage. Christina congratulated Shelby on her Sept. 14 marriage and said she loved the song. CeeLo (is it just me or is he wearing eye makeup?) said as much as he hates to say it, Shelbie really makes Blake’s team strong. Adam said she has great stage presence, and the performance was flawless. Blake said she commanded the stage and if he’d just woken up from a five-year coma, he’d think she was one of the biggest country music stars on the planet.

Download on iTunes:

Team Adam: James Wolpert (@JamesPWolpert), “A Case of You,” Joni Mitchell. Blake said he can’t be a geek and be that awesome at the same time. It takes a lot of confidence and courage to perform acoustically. Christina always knew he had incredible vocal range, but he really grounded himself in this song. He made the song a safe haven that drew people in. CeeLo said his image and ability is an irony that’s a very attractive quality. Adam said the fact that he bounced back from the last performance, he knew there was something in him he hadn’t seen yet. “You came back and did something incredibly bold … I could not be more proud of you.”

Download on iTunes:

Team Blake: Nic Hawk (@MrNicHawk), “Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke. Nic is so much fun to watch – he just seems like he’s having a blast. He even sings and raps! Christina said it was a ton of fun and Nic gave it his all. He even did the rap part of the song, only cleaning up the language. CeeLo said he has lots of natural rhythm and did an amazing job. Adam said he feels like an idiot for letting him go (which, of course, Blake loves), and was impressed that Nic did all the parts. Blake said he can’t think of another element – besides boobs – that he could have thrown into the performance. “You’re the complete entertainer … OMG,” said Blake.

Download on iTunes:

Team Blake: Ray Boudreaux (@RayBoudreaux), “Home,” Mark Broussard. Christina loved it and said it was the most connected she’s seen him on stage. CeeLo loved the grit and the way it translated to everyone there. Adam said it’s a hard song to do, and Mark Broussard would be proud. Blake said he’s in a cool position, because he’s an amazing singer, but also bringing awareness to the Delta Blues sound, a.k.a. “swamp pop.”

Download on iTunes:

Team Blake: Austin Jenckes (@AustinJenckes), “She Talks to Angels,” The Black Crowes. Christina said he sings with so much heart. CeeLo said he has effortless strength and commitment. Adam said he’s an incredible vocalist and this was a great song choice. Also, he’d like to take him out on a Harley (instead of a scooter) sometime. Blake said it takes a confident man to ride a moped. He added that he can always count on Austin to give 150 percent every time.

Download on iTunes:

Team Adam: Grey (@MusicbyGrey), “Still Into You,” Paramore. Blake said he was hoping to steal Grey, and she came out and dominated the stage. CeeLo was unfamiliar with the song, but he loved learning about it through her. Adam said he was happy she got out of “wedding singer” mode, and he couldn’t be more proud.

Download on iTunes:

Team Adam: Will Champlin (@willchamplin), “Secrets,” One Republic. Christina loves Will and is rooting for him. CeeLo said it was a dynamic and definitive performance. Adam said Will’s been bounced around in the competition, but he deserves to be here as much as anyone else. He has a very special vocal gift, and he’s also an incredible keyboard player.

Download on iTunes:

Team Adam: Preston Pohl (@PrestonPohl), “Nothin’ on You,” B.O.B. Blake said he’s blown away and called it “studly.” Christina said his voice is an old soul within itself. CeeLo said he thought he could have coached him better, but the other coaches are doing a great job. Adam said he’s not sure there’s anyone in the competition who sounds as unique as Preston.

Download on iTunes:

Team Blake: Cole Vosbury (@ColeVosbury), “Maggie May,” Rod Stewart. Perfect song for his voice, but he changes it up a bit from the Rod Stewart version. Christina said he’s always consistent. CeeLo said he still loves him unconditionally. Adam said he’s an idiot for not turning around for him. Blake said Cole is good for the show and he’s truly talented.

Download on iTunes:

Team Adam: Tessanne Chin (@Tessanne), “Many Rivers to Cross,” Jimmy Cliff. Christina said she knows what it feels like to cry tears of joy, so Tessanne should feel the love in the room for her. “Gorgeous, soaring vocals,” she said. CeeLo said they saved the best for last and she’s one of his favorites. Adam said she has a golden soul, and her talent is mind-boggling. “In my opinion, it does not get better than what you just did,” said Adam.
