The Comedy Corner: 3 Questions With Martin Mull

Martin Mull

Martin Mull is a comedy legend. He’s been on everything from “Two and a Half Men” to Fox TV’s new show “Dads.” He got his start in television on that ‘70s classic “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” and has been in countless TV series and movies. We’re pretty psyched that Mull took the time to answer our three questions.

1. Has being funny always come naturally to you, or did you have to hone your craft over the years?

“I would have to say that as funny as I am, which is probably quite limited, it is natural. I have not worked at it. I don’t think it’s something you can work at. Either you see things askew or you don’t. I tend to see things a little bit off balance.”

2. Did anyone in the comedy world inspire you to get into it? If so, who and why?

“Not people that inspired me to get into [comedy]. That was all just an accident, as I told you earlier because of not being able to sing [see story on Parade.com]. There were certain role models at that time … I think the first one would have to be Bob and Ray, which was a radio comic duo who actually had a brief skit on television. I would say Ernie Kovacs — all of these people that were just a little bit odd … They were a little off beat. They took their time. They were more conceptual.”

3. If the story of your life were made into a movie, who would you want to portray you and why?

“Well, I would want to portray me. I need the work!”
