The Killing Season 3 Premiere

The Killing Recap: The Jungle – Season 3, Episode 1

The Killing: Season 3, Episode 1

It’s been a long road, but we’ve finally arrived at the third season of “The Killing.” It’s good to see the crew again and hear that familiar “What up, Linden” from that smoldering hot mess Holder.

Ok, so maybe he’s not such a hot mess at the moment. He’s on a health kick and tells his partner, “I don’t eat meat, bitch,” when he brings him a burger. Plus he’s wearing a suit and “climbing the PD food chain, taking the sergeant exam in a month,” he tells Linden. Well, good for him.

Linden, too, is looking pretty good. At least, at the beginning of the episode. She’s running, says she’s quit smoking (though that didn’t last as the ep progressed), and seems happy working a minimum wage job on the ferry. I can see how that might be a relief after all the grief she’s gone through the past few years.

But Linden is WAY too happy, I wrote in my notes. Which I knew wouldn’t last, because that’s not the moody Linden we know and love, right?

It didn’t take her long to ditch her way-too-happy romance either. Honestly, in the first 20 minutes of this episode, I don’t think she smiled that much in all of the previous two seasons. Thank goodness she was all sad and sullen again by ep’s end. Who wouldn’t be after finding a pond full of decaying bodies? And taking it upon herself to kill that almost-dead cow in the shed. Holder was right. She can’t let things like that go, that much is clear.

And! She just couldn’t stop herself from getting involved in the case and entering that dark building with a flashlight and finding blood. Lots and lots of blood. And then hammering through the case with Holder.

Is Peter Sarsgaard one creepy and twisted villain or what? I did not see that scene with the prison chaplain coming. But what’s the deal? Seward’s in prison, so he couldn’t have committed those recent murders, right? Copycat, perhaps?

More thoughts:

Does anyone else think the Beacon pastor is just a little too nice? After all, we know that the teens KNOW the person in whom’s car they end up climbing, so I wonder if it might be the pastor.

Why did Seward’s kid draw those pictures of the trees? Could he have been there when Seward left the bodies in the water (if he, indeed, did)?

And why did Seward tell Linden he didn’t have a son?

Oh, and RAIN.

In which I’m super happy that Linden’s happy demeanor didn’t last through the end of the episode.

You had me at rain, Peter Sarsgaard, creepy pastor, smiling Linden, crazy hunka Holder and the dying cow, Jane. (Oh, and I said to Jim right before the blood hit the fan, that priest is getting way too close to Peter Sarsgaard’s cell bars. Ouch!)

Do we know what the backstory is on the kid drawing the trees? I think I need to go back and refresh my memory on how they came into the picture and where the kid fits in. I know it was her previous case, and that’s why she got the letter from the dept. of corrections – because Seward was finally going to be executed and they’re required to let her know. But then, why did Seward tell her he didn’t have a son? Was it figuratively speaking? And is it next Sunday yet?

That drawing was in both seasons, wasn’t it? And, yes, is it Sunday yet? We’re hooked.

I think it was in both seasons. I’m going to bring in my buddy, Mike Moody, who’s writing about the show over at Antenna Free TV. Mike – what’s the backstory on the kid’s drawings? No pressure or anything.

I decided not to watch this season. I found the slow pace aggravating and concluded the show was a waste of time. I also don’t go for the title. (Why does murder have to be the theme of so many TV shows?) But my husband watched and told me he enjoyed the episode.

I’ve heard that this season will move along faster than previous seasons, so we’ll see how that goes. In the first ep alone, we’ve already had Linden go from happy-go-lucky carefree back to her sullen self who’s all engrossed in a case, so there’s that.

So much time has elapsed since the last season, I also have to review the significance of those trees — they were definitely in the last season. And, yes, it was so odd to see Linden smiling in the initial stages of the first episode. Back to her usual sullen self in no time at all. She’s more interesting to me when she’s sullen anyway.
