The Bling Ring Poster

‘The Bling Ring’ Poster Makes No Sense

Here’s the final poster for “The Bling Ring.” Maybe I’m expecting too much from my movie posters, but I don’t really get this.

Oh, the people in the poster are ok. I get that they’re this ring of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the Internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes. (I didn’t get all that from the poster, but that’s what I know about the movie.)

But the lettering just sort of lies there like a rug. Shouldn’t it be more blingy? Or maybe that’s the point – that there IS no bling. That these people are just doing the wrong thing, and the black lettering that looks like it was pieced together by a first-grader sort of signifies that. Yeah, I probably expect too much.

“The Bling Ring” opens in theaters May 16, 2013.

Yeah, it’s a pretty uninspired poster. I remember reading about this case, and while I’m sure it will make a fascinating film, I hate making those kids famous. Sofia Coppola is brilliant, but doesn’t making a movie about these kids only perpetuate the problem?

Yeah, I kind of feel that way, too. It’s probably a fascinating story that shows the weird culture of celebrity that exists and makes people want to commit these types of crimes. On the other hand, you don’t want to turn these kids into heroes either. It might give other kids the wrong idea – that if they, too, commit crimes, they’ll end up in a feature film.

I feel the same way about the poster – the ALL CAPS typography makes it rug-ugly. Might it have been Sofia’s intention, though, to give us an early wince at the gold bling in the proverbial swine’s snout? Perhaps the uninspired senselessness of the poster, like the thieves it portrays, is the precise message Sofia wants to convey.
