Lay the FavoriteABOUT THE MOVIES:

1. LAY THE FAVORITE (blu-ray; rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, brief drug use, and nudity). Based on a true story, this comedy directed by Stephen Frears stars Rebecca Hall as Beth Raymer, a stripper who moves from Florida to Las Vegas to become a cocktail waitress.

In walks Dink (Bruce Willis), a professional sports bettor who sees through her bubbly exterior and offers her a job placing wagers all over town to gain an advantage over the casinos.

Turns out she has an impeccable mind for numbers, which cements her status as Dink’s good-luck charm, until his gorgeous-but-frigid wife, Tulip (Catherine Zeta-Jones), starts to get jealous. Dink fires her and she heads to New York to work for a smarmy bookie, which lands her on the wrong side of the law.

A Monster in Paris2. A MONSTER IN PARIS (blu-ray, blu-ray 3D, DVD, Digital; rated PG for some action violence involving gunplay, and mild rude humor). It’s Paris in 1910. Panic sweeps the city as floodwaters rise and a monster is on the loose! Meanwhile a wacky inventor, his camera-crazy best friend, and a madcap monkey are on a mission to protect the beast, Franc, as he holds a rare and special talent.

With the help of the beautiful but feisty singer Lucille, the team harbors the monster to keep him from the ghastly wannabe Mayor, Commissioner Maynott, who has a plan to capture Franc and reveal him to be nothing more than a monstrous danger to the people of Paris.

From Bibo Bergeron (director of “Shark Tale,” this delightful animated movie stars Adam Goldberg, Jay Harrington, Bob Balaban, Sean Lennon, Vanessa Paradis, Danny Huston and Catherine O’Hara.

One Day on Earth3. ONE DAY ON EARTH (DVD; not rated). What if you gave someone in every country of the world a camera, and then had them all document the very same day? That’s the concept of this lovely documentary, which is the first film of its kind. We see both the challenges and hopes of humanity from a diverse group of volunteer filmmakers assembled by a participatory media experiment. Our world is greatly interconnected, enormous, perilous, and wonderful.

The film charts the cycle of life over the 24-hour period of October 10, 2010. From every country of the world, we follow characters and events that evolve throughout the day, interspersed with expansive topical global montages that explore the progression of life from birth to death to birth again.

Compiled from over 3,000 hours of footage, this film offers an epic glimpse of humanity from more perspectives than ever seen before.
