If you’re looking for DVDs to buy, rent, or give as a gift this holiday season, you have plenty of options to choose from as 2012 draws to a close. Some of the most notable new release DVDs include:

Red Lights

Red Lights is a paranormal thriller with an impressive cast including Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver, and Cillian Murphy. The storyline is full of some great twists and features a surprise ending. The character played by De Niro is suitably mysterious, and there are some moments in this film that are genuinely scary.

Red Lights received mixed reviews from the critics, but it’s certainly worth a watch. Some people are going to enjoy watching this movie more than once, so they can dig deeper into the story. Rated R for language and some violence.

Prometheus

One of the most eagerly anticipated movies of 2012, Prometheus is a big budget sci-fi with amazing special effects and a story that involves humans coming into contact with aliens on another planet. This is a great movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Rated R for sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.

Ice Age 4 – Continental Drift

The Ice Age series has proved to be popular with kids, but plenty of adults love these movies, too. Some claim it’s the best of the series so far. This is a great film to rent, but if parents don’t mind watching it over and over, they might want to buy it for their kids as a birthday or holiday gift. Rated PG for mild rude humor and action/peril.

Downton Abbey – Series 3

Downton Abbey is not everyone’s cup of tea, but fans of the series are going to want this box set that includes all the episodes from series three. This is the type of show people will probably want to own, so they can revisit the costume drama often.

Ooh, I haven’t seen Red Lights yet, but it looks fantastic. Will definitely scout out a copy of that.

Red Lights.  That’s the one I want.  I’m a big Signoury Weever fan and love movies on the paranormal.
