Heart, Ann and Nancy Wilson

Heart, Donna Summer, Rush Nominated for 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Heart, Ann and Nancy Wilson

I was JUST reading an interview with Ann Wilson written by a colleague, Litsa Dremousis, for MSN Entertainment, and the very next day, a press release landed in my inbox noting Heart as a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Litsa asked Ann how she felt about the fans clamoring for Heart to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Ann said, ” … that’s the kind of acknowledgment where I know I’d feel honored. And I know Nancy would, too. But I don’t really understand the politics of that, what it takes to have that happen. I feel uncomfortable reaching out for something like that because it’s something other people give when they feel like it. You don’t ask for it. We are doing our true thing. To start thinking about awards and achievements, it’s very distracting.”

But the Rock and Roll gods have spoken, and Heart is indeed a nominee. Here’s the full list of nominees:

  • The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
  • Chic
  • Deep Purple
  • Heart
  • Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
  • Albert King
  • Kraftwerk
  • The Marvelettes
  • The Meters
  • Randy Newman
  • N.W.A
  • Procol Harum
  • Public Enemy
  • Rush
  • Donna Summer

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. That means the 2013 nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1987.

And gosh, when you think about it, it’s amazing some of these folks like Rush, Deep Purple, Procol Harum and yes, Heart, aren’t in the Hall of Fame already.

Here’s another cool thing: For the first time, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is offering fans the opportunity to participate in the selection process. From now until Wed., Dec. 5, 2012, the public can visit rockhall.com, hbo.com, CNN.com and rollingstone.com to cast votes for who they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2013 inductees.

All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, the nonprofit organization that exists to educate people on the global impact of the rock and roll art form via the museum, as well as its education programs and library and archives.

The 28th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in Los Angeles at the NokiaTheatre L.A. LIVE on Thursday, April 18, 2013. The show will air on HBO at a later date.
