Gollum at the Wellington Airport, New Zealand

Weta Workshop, Peter Jackson’s design company, has installed a suspended 42 foot long and 10 foot high Gollum sculpture in the main terminal at Wellington, New Zealand’s airport.

Gollum, a well-known character in Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy, grasps at one of the three massive fish hanging from the ceiling. The sculpture is 1.2 tons of Styrofoam covered in epoxy resin.

Installation took three nights. Watch a five minute video of the process below or a 30 second time lapse at the New Zealand Herald.

Gollum’s also appears in Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit Trilogy. The first installment The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey releases world wide on December 14, 2012.

@ConnieWang Ha ha! It really does. And I just saw something yesterday about there being some dwarves somewhere in Wellington?
