Julia Roberts as an Evil Queen? I Think Not

Mirror MirrorMirror Mirror opens this Friday, and it’s one of a bunch of fairytale-themed movie and TV projects right now. There’s Snow White and the Huntsman, Grimm and Once Upon a Time, to name a few.

What’s up with all the fairytales, people? Has everyone run out of new ideas, so they’re reverting back to old-fashioned stories? Whatever the reason, I don’t mind. A good tale is a good tale.

Well, let’s hope so anyway. Snow White and the Huntsman looks fabulous, partly because I can totally see Charlize Theron as an evil witch. Julia Roberts? Not so much. I mean, they’re two very different movies. Snow White appears to be a dark, gothic-inspired movie, whereas Mirror Mirror is more of a comedy.

But I’m just not sure Julia Roberts can pull off the evil queen role. I hate to say it, but I still see her in all those romantic comedies like Pretty Woman and My Best Friend’s Wedding. I know. Let it go, Jane.

Check out the trailer and see what you think. Does Julia Roberts work for you as an evil queen? And more importantly, does the movie just look completely dumb?

Well I like comedy movies. It will be interesting to see how Julia Roberts performs. I will watch this movie. Thanks for sharing the trailer.

This does look like a comedy from the trailer and that Snow White sounds very different, so if it really is a comedy, then Julia Roberts can pull it off. It will be interesting to compare the two movies, won’t it??

    Jane,
I’m sure you’ve seen Julia Roberts in Sleeping with the Enemy — not exactly a dark role but surely a dramatic one. as you point out she’s known as a comedienne, so I’ll bet she can pull this off. whether the movie will be worth it, I’m not so sure.

I’m with you Jane, I’m not buying it. Knight’s Tale was the last film that pulled off a mix of, oh, earnest cheesiness and legend-telling. This one looks like it’s going to rely on animation/faked imagery as much as acting.

Ah, come on, lighten up! Why does Grimm always have to be grim? I absolutely loved that trailer when I first saw it in the movie house and can’t wait to see Julia Roberts making fun of herself as a vain, over-the-hill queen.

Yes! I was very pleasantly surprised when this movie delivered some good laughs and solid family entertainment. The dwarves, especially, were really funny.

Hmmm…it’s out of character for Julia Roberts to play evil, but maybe that’s the whole point (?)
