John Noble, host of Dark Matters: Twisted but True
John Noble, my favorite fringey sci-fi host | Science Channel

Premiering tonight at 10 p.m. on the Science Channel is a new show called Dark Matters: Twisted But True. The subject matter is fun: we go inside the lab to explore strange science and bizarre experiments. It’s Fringe, only real life.

That’s what John Noble says about it, too. He’s hosting the show, and let’s face it, you couldn’t get a better host than him. He doesn’t use his British accent, though. It’s more like a cross between his two characters on Fringe: the slightly mad but loveable Dr. Walter Bishop and the stern Mr. Secretary, a.k.a. Walternate.

“The stories we share in Dark Matters: Twisted But True are as outlandish as a great sci-fi script or as disturbing as a classic horror tale. The only difference is that they’re all true,” says Noble. “The series offers a glimpse into the dark side of science, as well as human nature.”

Tonight’s ep features three stories:

  • Attempts in the 1920s by Dr. Ilya Ivanov to cross-breed humans and apes.
  • The testing of invisibility and teleportation during World War II, a.k.a. “the Philadelphia Experiment,” carried further by UFO expert Morris Jessup.
  • Thomas Edison’s experiments with electricity, which led to one of the most disturbing and dark inventions ever created.

Upcoming shows feature head transplants, zombie investigations, psychic arms races, full body transplants, mysterious energies, the existence of the human soul, death by radio waves and lots more.

Dark Matters: Twisted But True is a great show, not only because of the magnificent John Noble as host, but because humans are innately fascinated by the bizarre, the unexplained, and the shocking. You can bet I’ll be watching.
