Got a Favorite Snowy Movie?

‘New in Town,’ the 2009 romantic comedy starring Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr., isn’t what you’d call a spectacular movie. It’s a fairly generic rom-com where a city girl travels from sunny Miami to snowy Minnesota to begin the process of shutting down a corporate factory. You know in the first five minutes how it’s all going to end.

new-in-townBut about this time of year, I start craving snowy movies, and this one has plenty of the white stuff, from her first blast outside the Minnesota airport to her near-tragic incident with a cow, a car, and an icy road.

And since I live in snowy, farm-country Michigan, I know people like the Minnesotans in the movie, and I’ve experienced a few of my own icy road incidents, probably even some involving a cow.

Next up will probably be ‘Fargo,’ though I could do without the wood-chipper scene. Other favorite snowy movies include ‘Dr. Zhivago’ (the ice room!), ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,’ and ‘The Gold Rush,’ the 1925 classic featuring Charlie Chaplin’s trip to frozen Alaska (he did all his own stunts!). Here are three others…

snowy-movies-empire-strikes-back‘The Empire Strikes Back’ – You know that scene where Han Solo fights to survive in the frigid wasteland? Hey, I’m all for cuddling up with someone you love on a wintery night. Just don’t slice them open to stay warm.

‘Groundhog Day’ – This romantic comedy starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell is one of my favorites. You wouldn’t think they’d have all that much chemistry, but the scene where he carves the ice sculpture of her clinched it for me.

‘White Christmas’ – Christmas may be over for now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t watch this happy movie all year long. As I’m writing this, playing in my head is the joyful snow song they sang on the train.

What are your favorite snowy movies?

I’d have to go with The Shining along with Empire and Fargo. Yes, I like my dark movies.

I haven’t seen it in forever, but what about “The Man from Snowy River” count?

Another movie I haven’t seen in forever, but I like with snow–“Dr. Zhivago.” “Lara Croft Tome Raider” comes to mind too. It’s cold where I’m at too so it’s fun to think about snowy movies.

Little Women has some great snow scenes. Also, the silent movie Napoleon has a terrific scene of Napoleon learning battle tactics in a fierce snow ball fight at military school.

Not sure if I love watching snowy movies when it’s 7 degrees outside! But I do love both White Christmas and Dr. Zhivago, although for very different reasons.

I can’t think of a single one, isn’t that funny? I never really thought of identifying a movie as a snowy movie!

Little Women, as Rachel mentioned. Also, Home Alone, which we walked over Christmas.

I agree with all your choices, and add
It’s a Wonderful Life, the original one, and the 1970s remake with Marlo Thomas in the Jimmy Stewart role, called It Happened One Christmas. especially good snowy street scenes in the latter
Love Story — snow in New England…
The Night They Saved Christmas, which is a rather fluffy holiday movie with Jacklyn Smith in the lead role, loads of great snow scenes
Fallen Angel — Gary Sinise and Joely Richardson take on winter and relationships in Maine

and thanks for including the clip of the snow song — that could be my favorite song in the whole movie…

Groundhog Day is a fantastic snow movie – although, as a western Pennsylvanian, I will tell you that Gobbler’s Knob does NOT look that idyllic in real life. It’s basically a stage in the middle of the woods… ah, the magic of Hollywood!

Hmmm … I think you’ve covered it. All of these movies have snow/cold as a major environmental character. Maybe I cannot think of anything to add since it’s snowy and 6 below (and dropping) here this morning. My hubby just headed out to plow our driveway. Brrr ….

It’s a shame no one ever shows what it’s like to have bored, cooped up DOGS in these movies … because trust me … when it’s so cold they cry and hold up their feet during a quick potty trip outside … they get a some crazy canine cabin fever going.

Absolutely Little Women. Can’t ever watch it too much. And Fargo, another favorite of mine. And of course there’s always Being There and Big…

One of my favorite snowy movies we just rented last week. Iron Will. I love it for a good family type movie. My 7 year old was over the top impressed and really, you can’t beat a good feel-good movie. Such a great story.

When you said snow, the first thing I thought of was The Shining. However, I also love snow angel scene in one of The Grumpy Old Men movies.

I saw “New in Town.” Sort of a far-fetched movie although it did have lots of snow in it. Guess I’ll have to say “The Man From Snowy River” as my favorite snow movie. There’s a James Bond movie with a great ski chase but I can’t recall the name of it.
