I really loved the first ‘Cars’ movie, and now there’s another one headed to theaters on June 24, 2011. This time, Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) hit the road in 3D. Not a big fan of 3D here, but this movie holds lots of opportunities for great action, so I have high hopes.

Cars 2‘ finds star racecar Lightning McQueen and his buddy tow truck Mater heading overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix. Torn between assisting McQueen in the race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s journey leads him on a chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world.

Sadly, I’m guessing we won’t hear Paul Newman’s voice – unless they flash back to the first movie (which wouldn’t surprise me) – but we’ll have John Ratzenberger (Mack), Bonnie Hunt (Sally Carrera), Tony Shalhoub (Luigi), and Cheech Marin (Ramone), as well as plenty of new characters.

Check out the trailer and see what you think. Looking forward to this one!

Given my 4yo’s level of obsession with cars and all the Mater’s Tall Tale spinoffs, I’m pretty sure he’s going to have a coronary when he sees this. But I have to say, I’m disappointed to see guns & explosions. Totally unnecessary for a movie about vehicles.

Debbie – I know. Why mess up the sweet storyline of the first movie, right? This new one has spies and international espionage! What is it – James Bond?! Ack.

I didn’t even know they were doing a second. But I think you’re right–this sounds like a sequel plotted out by committee. Yikes.
